duck v. goose

  • Duck, duck, goose. Ducks are smaller than geese.
  • Ducks have short necks; geese have long necks.
  • Female ducks quack; geese honk.
  • Ducks (particularly males) may have ornate plumage with bright patches in various colors; geese are usually white or grey with black markings.
  • Male and female ducks are colored differently; both sexes have the same coloration in geese.
  • Geese are more terrestrial than ducks. Geese have long, centrally placed legs, and can walk easily. Ducks, with shorter legs placed toward the rear of the body, tend to waddle.
  • Duck nostrils are located toward the top of the bill; goose nostrils can be found around the middle of the bill.
  • Ducks feed primarily in the water on fish, insects, worms, amphibians, and grasses; geese graze on land, eating grasses and grains.
  • Geese can be more aggressive than ducks.
  • Duck down has a much stronger odor than goose down.
