grill v. grille

Image courtesy of stangbangers.com Either word can be an array of parallel or crossed bars used as a barrier, screen, or decorative element over an opening. However, a grill (without an ‘e’) is a cooking surface, as used in a barbecue. Grill can also be used as a verb, meaning ‘to broil on a gridiron’, or ‘to question relentlessly’.

grille (with an ‘e’) is a grating that allows air to enter a vehicle or HVAC system. Distinctive car grilles are a primary styling cue used to enhance brand recognition.
