imply v. infer

Imply means ‘to express indirectly’ or ‘to suggest without stating explicitly’. Infer means ‘to draw a conclusion based on reasoning from evidence’. In other words, a speaker implies by making a suggestion, and a listener infers by deducing the suggestion’s meaning.
