legibility v. readability

Legibility

In typography, legibility refers to how easily the letters in a typeface can be distinguished from one another, and is affected by details including:

  • the height of lowercase letters
  • the size of negative spaces within letters
  • character proportions
  • stroke thickness variations
  • embellishments such as serifs

Readability

Readability deals with how much effort is required to read a block of text. It is a function of:

  • spacing between letters, words, and lines
  • font size
  • line length and alignment
  • text and background colors
