newt v. salamander
Monday, November 16, 2009
Brady Barr with a Japanese giant salamander from National Geographic Salamanders are amphibians of the order Caudata, having slender bodies and long tails. Newts are a subset of salamanders, belonging to the (confusingly named) Salamandridae family, subfamily Pleurodelinae.
Generally, adult newts spend more time in the water than other salamanders. Salamanders have rounder tails and slimier skin than newts. Salamanders sometimes have parallel vertical indentations running along their sides known as costal grooves; these are largely absent in newts. In addition, there may be more overt differences between newt sexes than between salamander sexes.
