perfume v. cologne

Perfume contains about 30% essential oils by volume, whereas cologne is more dilute, with around 5% essential oils. Consequently, perfume has a stronger, longer-lasting scent, and costs more than cologne. Cologne has a single scent, but perfume has a more intricate, layered fragrance, consisting of a volatile top note, a primary middle note, and a persistent base note. Colognes may be used by men or women, but in English, the implication is that cologne is a men’s fragrance.
