revenge v. avenge

To revenge is to punish someone who has wronged you, to retaliate. Revenge may be motivated by spite, the desire to see others suffer.

To avenge is to punish someone on behalf of someone else who was wronged. Avenge carries the more noble connotation of serving justice.
