shovel v. spade

A shovel is a hand tool for lifting and moving loose material such as soil, snow, or gravel. The blade of a shovel is broad and cupped or has upturned sides to aid in scooping.

A spade is a similar looking tool for digging, loosening, and prising soil. Unlike a shovel, a spade has a narrow, nearly flat blade. A spade is sometimes considered to be a type of shovel.
