uptown v. downtown

Uptown is the residential or upscale part of a city. Downtown encompasses a city’s historical core or central business district. The terms likely arose to describe parts of (or directions in) New York City, where the town originated on the southern end of the island of Manhattan and grew to the north. In this case, downtown corresponds to south and uptown corresponds to north.
